Buying Property in Santa Pola

Santa Pola just south of Alicante and only 15 minutes from Alicante airport is a town with a clear sense of history and the Roman architecture is obvious as you walk around the town. Santa Pola has always been associated with both fishing and the salt flats just south, in fact one of the Roman buildings here was used for salting fish which was presumably then an important export for the town.

Santa Pola is still a working town with a fishing fleet and a permanent fish market next to the port and as such has a much more Spanish feel to it than many towns along the Costa Blanca which have now been tailored almost exclusively to the ex pat and holiday markets. It also means it has pretty much a full population all year round rather than just in the summer months and a full range of traditional Spanish bars, shops and restaurants which many people feel are a great attraction to the town. As a result new developments with villas and apartments for sale have grown up on the outskirts of the old town of Santa Pola to cater for the ever growing number of people attracted to the life in a 'real' Spanish coastal town.

There is plenty to do in Santa Pola with the town having some exceptional beaches offering all the water sports associated with them and these are an obvious attraction for both foreign and local Spanish tourists who also choose to holiday here. The salt flats which at certain times of the year are visited by flocks of flamingos are also a great draw. Santa Pola also has its own funfair, archaeological museum, a fishing museum with a large aquarium and in the evenings the central plaza becomes a hub of activity and the perfect place to start off the nightlife of the town. Regular boat trips are also run to the island of Tabarca a few miles off the coast which has historic interest due to its use by pirates around the sixteenth century, but is now a nature reserve.

Although holiday properties can be found in the old town of Santa Pola there is a much wider range available in the new developments which have everything from luxury villa with pools to more affordable apartments for sale.
